La Verkin is a very small city in Washington County located just north of Hurricane. It’s home to less than 5000 residents and Hurricane and La Verkin both have close historical ties. It contains the southernmost highway junction to Zion National Park and is home to the put Tempe Hot Springs, a historic volcanic Silver Spring on the edge of the Virgin River, which the town is likely named after. The city got its first settlers back in 1899 and its first post office in 1903. Some people think that the name La Verkin is an Indian name for Beautiful Valley but there are many theories as to how this small city actually got its name. Regardless, it’s been growing slowly over the years and after the town of Hurricane was established, La Verkin Canals contributed to the establishment of the community.
For those that work or travel to local cities such as Zion National Park and the St. George, La Verkin makes a great place to call home. It’s a very modest size town, which borders the banks of the Virgin River. The area has rich farmlands and a mineral hot spring with a gorgeous typography and views of the Pine Valley Mountain and the Virgin River.
La Verkin is part of the Washington County school district and features just one school, the La Verkin elementary school. For middle schoolers and high schools, students are best to the Hurricane high school and the Hurricane middle school. There are typically less than 600 students in the elementary school.
This beautiful city is close to national parks, offers warm and sunny weather practically year-round, and has several retirement communities, gated communities, and homes against the beautiful red rock backdrop. The cost of living is about 2.4% lower than the national average and the unemployment rate is lower than the US average as well.
The median home price in La Verkin is about $254,000. Homes have appreciated nearly 17% over the last decade. For those looking to live close to outdoor recreational facilities, La Verkin has several communities and neighborhoods that back up to the National Zion Park. Home prices start at about $150,000 up to about $450,000 based on size, condition, and location. You’ll find a mix of single-family homes, duplexes, and both single and two-story designs. La Verkin also has several parcels and lots for sale where you can build your dream home in a spot that offers you the most stunning view in southern Utah.
