What to See
Dixie Rock and the Sugarloaf
The park's best-known landmark is the red sandstone formation with "DIXIE" painted in white letters, visible from much of the city. The Dixie Sugarloaf was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. Its history is covered in this post on Dixie Rock.
The slot canyon
A short, narrow slot canyon in the park is a favorite with kids and a gentle introduction to the kind of canyons found across Southern Utah. Expect to scramble a little and turn sideways in spots.
Short trails and slickrock
Several short trails wind across the sandstone, including routes to a pioneer cabin site and viewpoints over downtown, the temple and the Pine Valley Mountains. Kids can climb and explore the rounded rock freely, and the park is popular with rock climbers too. Trails also connect into the larger Red Cliffs Desert Reserve for longer hikes.
Next Door: Red Hills Desert Garden
Just down the hill on Red Hills Parkway, the Red Hills Desert Garden showcases about 5,000 water-efficient plants on roughly five acres, with a replica slot canyon and walking paths, an easy add-on to a park visit. The paved Red Hills Parkway Trail runs along the same corridor.
Planning a Visit
- Getting there: Pioneer Park is on Red Hills Parkway, a few minutes north of downtown, with parking right next to the rocks.
- Cost: it's a free city park.
- Best time: mornings and evenings from fall through spring. In summer, the sandstone gets very hot by midday.
- Bring: water, sunscreen and shoes with good grip for the slickrock.
- Be careful near edges and keep a close eye on small children on the higher rocks.
Leave No Trace
Unfortunately, some visitors carve names into the soft sandstone. Carving or painting rock damages a place everyone shares, so leave the rock as you found it and pack out all trash.
