Dry winter air shows up as cracked lips, static shocks, a scratchy throat in the morning and wood floors that open small gaps between boards. A humidifier fixes that, but the three main types work in very different ways, and the choice decides what ends up in the air besides water, how often the unit needs scrubbing and how much it adds to the power bill.

This guide explains how ultrasonic, evaporative and warm-mist (steam) humidifiers differ, what the EPA says about the white dust some of them leave behind, and which current models fit which rooms.

Quick verdict: which humidifier to buy

  • Best for most bedrooms if tap water is the plan: Vornado EV100. Evaporative, so no white dust, with a humidistat that holds a set level between 40 and 60 percent.
  • Easiest to keep clean: Canopy Humidifier Plus. Evaporative, UV-treated water, dishwasher-safe parts and a design that runs until the tank is empty so water doesn't sit.
  • Open floor plans and large living areas: Levoit Superior 6000S. A 6-gallon evaporative unit rated for up to 3,000 square feet.
  • Fastest output for a big room, with distilled water: Levoit LV600S. Ultrasonic with both warm and cool mist, app control and a 6-liter tank.
  • Budget nightstand pick: Dreo 3L Ultrasonic Humidifier. Small, quiet and simple, but plan on distilled water.
  • Warm steam with no filters: Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier (V745A). Boils water, so it doesn't spread minerals, but it uses far more power and should stay out of reach of children.

How the three types work

The EPA groups home humidifiers by how they put water into the air. That mechanism matters more than any feature on the box.

  • Ultrasonic: a plate vibrating at ultrasonic frequency shakes water into a fine, visible mist. Quiet and cheap to run, but whatever is dissolved in the water leaves with the mist.
  • Evaporative: a fan blows air through a wet wick or filter. Water leaves as vapor, which is invisible, and minerals stay behind in the wick. Because evaporation slows as the air gets damper, these units tend to level off rather than overshoot.
  • Steam vaporizer / warm mist: a heater boils the water and releases steam. Some "warm mist" models cool the steam slightly before it exits. Boiling leaves minerals in the unit, but it takes far more electricity.

Some ultrasonic models, including the Levoit LV600S, also offer a "warm mist" setting. That warms the water before it is misted. It is still an ultrasonic humidifier, so the mineral advice below still applies.

Coverage figures are each manufacturer's own rating, and they are optimistic in drafty or high-ceiling rooms. Check the current listing before buying, since several of these brands sell near-identical models under similar names.

The white dust problem with ultrasonic humidifiers

The EPA's humidifier guidance says ultrasonic and impeller models are the types most likely to disperse minerals from the water, and that they do it very efficiently. Evaporative and steam units are not expected to release substantial amounts. In homes with hard water, the minerals settle as a fine white film on furniture, screens and window sills.

The EPA notes that the federal government hasn't concluded that this mineral dust is a serious health risk, but it still recommends low-mineral water. Its specific advice:

  • Use water labeled "distilled." Distillation removes more minerals than deionized or reverse-osmosis water typically does.
  • Avoid bottled water labeled "spring," "artesian" or "mineral," which hasn't been demineralized.
  • Demineralization cartridges vary in how well they work. Visible white dust means minerals are getting through.

That makes the real cost of an ultrasonic unit more than its sticker. A medium bedroom humidifier can go through a gallon or more a day in dry weather, so a winter of distilled water adds up. Households that don't want to haul jugs home are usually better off with an evaporative model, which handles tap water without the dust.

Evaporative picks: tap water friendly

Vornado EV100

The EV100 is a compact 1-gallon evaporative unit rated for rooms up to about 260 square feet. Its electronic humidistat offers six settings from 40 to 60 percent or continuous output, plus three fan speeds, and the rated draw is a modest 14.3 watts. Vornado backs it with a 5-year replacement guarantee. The trade-off is that wicks have to be replaced on schedule, and the fan makes a steady white-noise sound that some sleepers like and others don't.

Canopy Humidifier Plus

Canopy built its design around the cleaning problem. Water passes UV light on its way to the filter, the parts are dishwasher safe, and sensors keep the unit running until no water is left, so there's no stale puddle sitting in the base between uses. The Plus holds 5.5 liters, runs up to 36 hours per fill and is rated for up to 1,000 square feet. Replacement filters are an ongoing expense, and it costs more up front than the other bedroom-size picks.

Honeywell HCM350B

The long-running Honeywell HCM350B evaporative design pairs a 1.1-gallon tank with a UV feature that treats the water and a wicking filter that catches minerals. Honeywell lists up to 24 hours of run time and dishwasher-safe water-contact parts. It is a simple, no-app choice for a child's room or a home office. Honeywell recommends its own Filter A replacements, and the wick should be swapped when it turns hard and crusty.

Levoit Superior 6000S

For a great room or an open main floor, a small tabletop unit can't keep up. The 6000S holds 23 liters, is rated at 1,500 mL per hour of output and up to 72 hours on low, and rolls on wheels. Levoit says it works with tap water and lists a filter life of three to six months. It is large, and the evaporative fan is louder at top speed than an ultrasonic unit, but it can do the work of several small humidifiers.

Ultrasonic picks: quiet and fast, with distilled water

The Levoit LV600S is a large ultrasonic unit with a 6-liter tank, rated for rooms up to 753 square feet, with warm and cool mist, an auto mode tied to a built-in humidity sensor, app scheduling and a sleep mode that Levoit rates under 28 dB. Warm mist raises its power draw (the listing shows 280 watts), and the tank and base need regular scrubbing. Levoit's own listing advises distilled or filtered water to limit white dust.

The Dreo 3L is the budget end of the same idea: a 3-liter top-fill tank, about 250 mL per hour of output, rated for rooms up to 300 square feet, and up to 30 hours of run time in sleep mode at a rated 26 dB. It suits a nightstand in a smaller bedroom.

Warm-mist steam: the trade-offs

A steam vaporizer like the Vicks V745A boils water in a 1-gallon tank, needs no filters and doesn't spread minerals. It also draws far more power than an evaporative or cool ultrasonic unit (the listing shows 248 watts, versus about 14 watts for the Vornado), and the boiling water is a burn hazard. The EPA specifically advises keeping steam vaporizers out of children's reach. Mineral scale builds up on the heating element, so it needs regular descaling with vinegar.

Keeping any humidifier clean

A dirty tank can grow bacteria and mold, and an ultrasonic or impeller unit can then spray it into the room. The EPA's routine for portable units is simple:

  1. Unplug before changing water or cleaning.
  2. Empty, wipe dry and refill the tank every day rather than topping it off.
  3. Clean every third day, scrubbing away scale and film. Follow the manufacturer's directions, or use a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution if none are given, then rinse well.
  4. At the end of the season, clean the unit, dry every part fully and store it dry.

How humid is too humid?

More moisture isn't better. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity at or below 50 percent, and condensation on windows, walls or pictures is a sign to turn the unit down, move it or run it less. A built-in humidistat helps, but a separate hygrometer across the room gives a more honest reading than a sensor sitting inches from the mist. Humidifiers don't clean the air. Pairing one with an air purifier sized by CADR handles dust and smoke, and homes with very hard water may also want to read about whole-house water treatment options before deciding between tap and distilled water.

Who should buy which

  • Bedroom, tap water, low fuss: Vornado EV100 or Honeywell HCM350B.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ultrasonic or evaporative humidifier better?

It depends on the water. Ultrasonic humidifiers are quiet and inexpensive to run, but the EPA says they disperse minerals from tap water very efficiently, which shows up as white dust. Evaporative humidifiers leave minerals in the wick, so they handle tap water without dust, at the cost of fan noise and replacement wicks.

Do ultrasonic humidifiers need distilled water?

Distilled water is strongly recommended. The EPA advises low-mineral water such as distilled water, notes that deionized and reverse-osmosis water usually contain more minerals than distilled, and warns that spring, artesian or mineral water has not been demineralized. Visible white dust is a sign minerals are getting into the air.

Are warm-mist humidifiers safe around children?

Steam vaporizers boil water, and the EPA advises keeping them out of children's reach because hot water and steam can cause burns. Households with young children often choose a cool-mist evaporative model instead, which also avoids the mineral dust problem of ultrasonic units.

How often should a humidifier be cleaned?

For portable units, the EPA recommends emptying, wiping dry and refilling the tank daily, and cleaning every third day to remove scale and film. Use the manufacturer's cleaning instructions, or a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution if none are given, and rinse thoroughly afterward.

What humidity level should a home be kept at?

The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity at or below 50 percent. If water starts condensing on windows, walls or pictures, lower the humidistat setting, move the humidifier or run it less. A separate hygrometer placed away from the unit gives the most accurate reading.

What size humidifier is needed for a large room or open floor plan?

Look at the rated coverage and output, then allow some margin for high ceilings and drafts. Bedroom units typically cover 250 to 750 square feet, while large evaporative models such as the Levoit Superior 6000S are rated for up to 3,000 square feet with a 6-gallon tank.
