Tree-lined residential street below the mountains in Smithfield, Utah

Smithfield sits in northern Cache Valley about seven miles north of Logan, where US-91 runs through town as Main Street and the Bear River Range rises right behind the east-side neighborhoods. The 2020 Census counted 13,571 residents, which makes it the second-largest city in the Logan metro area after Logan itself. It was settled in the late 1850s along Summit Creek and named for Bishop John Glover Smith.

Smithfield is mostly a place where people live rather than a tourist stop, but the things to do here are better than a passing drive suggests: a canyon and wilderness trailhead on the edge of town, an 18-hole city golf course, an eight-court pickleball complex, summer baseball with roots in the 1920s, and Health Days, a May celebration that has run for a century. This guide groups them by type.

Smithfield Canyon and Smithfield Campground

Head east on 400 North and it turns into Canyon Road, which climbs into Smithfield Canyon in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Smithfield Campground sits about five miles up the canyon: a small, primitive Forest Service campground with picnic tables and vault toilets that is open from spring through the end of September and can be reserved on Recreation.gov. There is no drinking water, so bring your own.

About two miles past the campground, the Smithfield Canyon trailhead leads into the Mount Naomi Wilderness. The trail follows the canyon toward the high country and connects to Tony Grove Lake in Logan Canyon, making it a long day hike or horseback ride. The trailhead has a stock ramp, and bikes are not allowed inside the wilderness boundary.

Cherry Peak Resort

Cherry Peak Resort, in Cherry Canyon just east of neighboring Richmond, is the closest ski area to Smithfield. It opened in 2015 and has about 29 runs served by three triple chairlifts, plus night skiing in winter and a summer concert series. Check the resort's website for current lift schedules and summer events.

Logan Canyon Scenic Byway

Logan Canyon starts on the east side of Logan, a short drive south. The US-89 byway leads to campgrounds, fishing on the Logan River, climbing walls and trailheads, and continues over the mountains to Bear Lake. Tony Grove Lake, reached by a side road high in the canyon, is the area's classic summer wildflower destination.

Parks and Recreation in Town

Smithfield's parks are spread around town and each has its own focus:

  • Central Park (100 North 25 West): a splash pad, skate park, restrooms and a covered picnic area with a dozen tables, a block from Main Street.
  • Mack Park (325 East Canyon Road): three pavilion areas, playgrounds, horseshoe pits and sand volleyball. It hosts the Health Days fun run.
  • Heritage Park (Center Street and 350 West): a gazebo and disc golf.
  • Forrester Acres (100 North 500 West): softball, Little League and pony fields, batting cages, an equestrian park, disc golf, a trail system and the home field of the Smithfield Blue Sox.

Smithfield City Pickleball Complex

The eight-court pickleball complex at Forrester Acres is open from dawn until 10 p.m. Courts 1 through 4 are first come, first served, and courts 5 through 8 can be reserved through the city.

Birch Creek Golf Course

Birch Creek Golf Course is Smithfield's city-owned 18-hole, par-72 public course, and the Health Days week includes a golf tournament.

Summer Baseball: The Smithfield Blue Sox

The Smithfield Blue Sox play amateur summer baseball in the Northern Utah League at Forrester Acres. The team name dates to 1921, and the club won the league tournament in 2025. Games run through the summer, and the team plays a doubleheader during Health Days.

History: The Carnegie Library

The Smithfield Public Library at 25 North Main Street is a Carnegie library built in 1921 in the Prairie School style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. It is the best-known historic building on Main Street. The Smithfield Historical Society leads photo displays and tours of historic sites during Health Days.

Health Days (Early May)

Smithfield Health Days is the town's signature celebration, held every spring since 1925. It started in May 1925, when Summit School principal Sarah McCracken organized a health day in response to a national call from President Coolidge, and the first theme was dental hygiene. It now fills a full week in early May with:

  • a parade, pancake breakfast and fireworks
  • the Health Days Race (10K, 5K and Mayor's Mile) and a fun run at Mack Park
  • horse pulls, a kids' bike race and a Show & Shine car show
  • pickleball and golf tournaments and a Blue Sox doubleheader
  • a chalk art festival, Battle of the Bands and the City Ambassador Pageant

The city publishes the full schedule each spring on its recreation website.

  • Richmond and North Logan: the neighboring towns on either side of Smithfield, each with its own parks and small-town events.

Food in Smithfield

Dining in Smithfield is mostly local and casual. Callaway's at 54 North Main is the best-known sit-down restaurant, serving Italian pasta and pizza. South Main Street has the town's cluster of fast-food chains, and Logan is close enough for a much wider choice. Check hours before heading out, since small-town restaurant hours change.
