Smart Christmas Tree Lights Compared: Govee String Lights 2 vs. Govee Tree Lights vs. Twinkly
Govee String Lights 2, Govee Tree Lights and Twinkly compared: installation, looks lit and unlit, apps, mapping, IP ratings and who should buy which.
Smart Christmas tree lights all promise the same things: app control, millions of colors, music sync and voice control. Put three popular sets on three similar trees, though, and they turn out to be very different products. One wraps around the tree like ordinary lights. One drops over the top as a ready-made cone of vertical strands. One gets scanned with a phone camera so the app knows where every bulb sits.
This guide compares Govee Christmas String Lights 2, the Govee Christmas Tree Lights and Twinkly Strings: how each one goes on the tree, how it looks lit and unlit, what the apps actually do, and which kind of decorator each one suits.

Quick verdict
- Fullest, most natural-looking tree: Govee Christmas Lights 2 (164 ft, 500 LEDs). Small bulbs on a green wire disappear into the branches, a separate warm white LED gives a real classic white, and the scenes lean classic rather than frantic. The 99 ft version covers most 7 to 7.5 ft trees.
- Fastest install and the best pictures on the tree: Govee Christmas Tree Lights. Twenty-four strands hang straight down from a top ring, so animations and drawings read as clean images. The trade-off is an orderly, almost mechanical look.
- Most effects and the deepest customization: Twinkly Strings 400 RGB. Camera mapping builds a 3D model of the tree, and the effect library is huge and motion-heavy. It is also the hardest of the three to hang, and it is only splash resistant.
The three sets side by side
| Set | Shop | LEDs and layout | Light type | Weather rating | Smart home | Tree size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Govee Christmas Lights 2, 164 ft | 500 LEDs on one strand you wrap | RGBWIC (color plus dedicated warm white) | IP65 strand, IP44 adapter | Alexa, Google Home, Matter | Govee recommends it for a 9 ft tree | |
| Govee Christmas Lights 2, 99 ft | 300 LEDs on one strand you wrap | RGBWIC | IP65 strand, IP44 adapter | Alexa, Google Home, Matter | Govee recommends it for a 7.5 ft tree | |
| Govee Christmas Tree Lights | 480 LEDs on 24 vertical strands, 6.6 ft each | RGBIC (color only) | IP65 strands, IP44 adapter | Alexa, Google Assistant; Matter listed by Govee | 6.5 to 8 ft trees | |
| Twinkly Strings 400 RGB | 400 LEDs on a 105 ft strand you wrap | RGB, camera-mapped | IP44 | Alexa, Google Home, Razer Chroma | No official sizing; best on 7 ft and smaller trees |
Every set here has addressable LEDs (each bulb can show its own color), a phone app, scenes and a music-reactive mode. The differences are in how the lights are laid out and how much the app knows about where each bulb is.

What side-by-side comparisons found
Installation: one drops on, two have to be wrapped
The Govee Tree Lights install in a completely different way. A support bar zip-ties to the trunk at the top, a ring sits on it, and the 24 strands fall down the sides of the tree. A thin wire links the strands so they hang straight. Getting the strands evenly spaced at the top matters more than anything else, because any crooked strand turns a pattern into a wavy one. There is also a gap at the back where the ring's wiring comes together, so the tree needs to sit against a wall or in a corner.
The Govee String Lights 2 wrap like any ordinary strand: start at the bottom, work around and up, and leave a narrow unlit gap at the back if the tree faces one way. On a 7.5 ft tree, rows about 10 to 12 inches apart still left a lot of the 164 ft strand unused. The extra length went into doubling back for a denser look, and rows closer to 6 inches would have used it up. For a tree that size, the 99 ft set is usually enough. That matches Govee's own guidance of 99 ft for a 7.5 ft tree and 164 ft for a 9 ft tree.
Twinkly was the hardest to hang. Its strand tangled far more easily than the Govee wire, and with 400 LEDs it was the set assigned to the smallest, 7 ft tree. Working up from the bottom and tucking the last few feet into a thin spot gave the most even coverage. None of these kits is generous for a 9 ft tree; only the longest Govee strand is sized for one.
The look: lit and unlit
Lit, the three trees looked nothing alike. The Govee Tree Lights produce neat vertical lines that look organized, even robotic, before any ornaments go on. That structure is what lets drawings and animations read as recognizable shapes. The String Lights 2 look looser and more like a traditionally lit tree, and with 500 LEDs the 164 ft set gave the fullest tree of the three. Twinkly's bulbs scatter randomly around the tree, which looks natural when the lights are lit.
Unlit matters too, because the tree spends daylight hours turned off. The String Lights 2 have tiny LEDs set into a wire that closely matches typical artificial-tree green, so from across the room they almost vanish. The Tree Lights use larger LEDs on a flat ribbon-style wire that stays obvious when switched off. Twinkly's green wire is noticeably darker than most artificial trees and reads almost black against lighter branches. From a distance it disappears, and on a dark-needled tree it may actually blend in better than the Govee green.
The apps: different personalities
Setup is similar across all three: add the device, press the button on the controller to pair over Bluetooth, enter the Wi-Fi details, and expect a firmware update before anything else works.
- Govee Tree Lights: the Christmas scenes are animated and bold. A Santa face crosses the tree and bubbles rise up it. A pixel canvas mapped to the tree's surface lets anyone draw a simple image and see it on the branches. The voice and music mode reacted quickly even to talking.
- Govee String Lights 2: there are just as many scenes, but they're calmer: classic red and green, and gold touches on a bell theme. Reds and greens are deep and saturated. Color can be set per segment or per LED, and a finger-sketch tool is available, but on a wrapped strand the result is less predictable than on the vertical Tree Lights. On the same "Christmas tree" scene, the Tree Lights were lively and kid-friendly while the String Lights 2 were the subdued option.
- Twinkly: after pairing, the app has the user walk around the tree with the phone camera until it has mapped every bulb. It then shows a virtual model of the tree, and effects are placed in 3D. The library is enormous and mostly motion: rainbows, sweeps and twinkles that some will love and others will find loud. Calm, static looks are possible but not its strength, and the most impressive features reward people willing to design their own effects. In daylight it looked dimmer than its preview in the app; after dark it looked bright.
Both Govee sets work with Govee's DreamView syncing, so a tree and a second Govee set elsewhere in the room can run matching colors.

How to choose
Decide how the tree should look when nothing is animating
Most nights, a tree runs one steady scene. If that scene should look like a classic, evenly lit tree, a wrapped strand (Govee String Lights 2) wins, and its dedicated warm white LEDs give a truer white than mixing red, green and blue. If the point is patterns and pictures, the vertical Govee Tree Lights win.
Match the length to the tree
For wrapped strands, follow the maker's sizing and lean longer only for very dense wrapping. A 7 to 7.5 ft tree is well covered by 99 ft of Govee String Lights 2, and the 164 ft set suits 9 ft trees or heavy wrapping. The Tree Lights are sized by height and base circumference (6.5 to 8 ft, about 44 to 54 inches around the bottom), so measure before ordering.
Check the weather rating before going outdoors
Both Govee sets have IP65 light strands, which handle rain on an outdoor evergreen, but their power adapters are only IP44 and belong in a dry spot or a weatherproof box. Twinkly Strings are IP44 throughout, which means splash resistant: fine under a covered porch, not out in open weather. For lights that stay up all year on the roofline, see the permanent outdoor lights comparison.
Think about who will use the app
Twinkly rewards tinkering. Govee's String Lights 2 look good with almost no effort. The Tree Lights fall in between: easy to set up, with drawing tools for anyone who wants them.
The picks in detail
Govee Christmas Lights 2: the best all-round tree light
The String Lights 2 come in 66, 99, 164 and 328 ft lengths. They use RGBWIC beads, which add a separate warm white LED to the color chips, plus shape mapping, more than 130 preset scenes and Matter support alongside Alexa and Google Home. Govee rates the strand IP65 and cold resistant down to -4°F. The green wire is the quiet strength: the tree looks normal in daylight. Choose the length by tree height rather than buying the longest set by default.

Govee Christmas Tree Lights: the easy, graphic option
This set has 480 LEDs on 24 strands of 20, an 11.5 ft power lead, and a mounting kit of support bar, ring, cable ties and straps. Govee lists 60 preset scenes, music modes and AI-generated image and GIF effects. It's the quickest way to light a tree, and the only one of the three that turns the tree into a readable picture. Buy it for a tree against a wall, and expect the lit-but-static look to be tidy rather than traditional.

Twinkly Strings 400 RGB: the effects machine
The 400-LED Twinkly strand is 105 ft long, with LEDs about 3.2 inches apart, and connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Twinkly says the app uses the phone camera to locate each LED wherever it sits, which is what makes its effects follow the tree's real shape. It also links to Razer Chroma for anyone who wants the tree to react to a gaming setup. The strands can't be extended and the LEDs aren't replaceable. The RGB version has no dedicated white chip, so its whites are mixed. Full details are on Twinkly's Strings product page.

Who should buy which
- A traditional-looking tree that can still do color shows: Govee String Lights 2, sized to the tree.
- Kids, quick setup, or a tree that shows pictures: Govee Christmas Tree Lights.
- Creative users who want the most effects and 3D mapping: Twinkly Strings.
- An outdoor evergreen in open weather: either Govee set, with the adapter kept dry. Skip Twinkly unless the tree is under cover.
Whichever set goes on the tree, it helps to plan the rest of the season's lighting at the same time. The guide to when to hang Christmas lights covers timing, and the smart bulbs vs. smart switches comparison explains how Govee's app fits with the rest of a smart lighting setup.

Frequently asked questions
Is Twinkly or Govee better for a Christmas tree?
It depends on the look. Govee Christmas String Lights 2 give a fuller, more traditional tree, with a green wire that blends into the branches and a dedicated warm white LED. Twinkly has the bigger effects library and camera-based 3D mapping, but it is harder to hang and splash resistant only (IP44). For a tree that shows pictures, Govee's vertical-strand Christmas Tree Lights beat both.
How many feet of smart lights does a 7.5-foot Christmas tree need?
Govee recommends 99 ft of its String Lights 2 for a 7.5 ft tree, 66 ft for a 6 ft tree and 164 ft for a 9 ft tree. The 164 ft strand on a 7.5 ft tree leaves plenty spare unless the rows are wrapped about 6 inches apart.
Can smart Christmas tree lights be used outdoors?
Some can. Govee's String Lights 2 and Christmas Tree Lights have IP65-rated strands, which handle rain, but the power adapters are IP44 and should stay in a dry spot or a weatherproof outlet box. Twinkly Strings are IP44, which is splash resistant, so outdoors they belong under a covered porch or overhang.
Do Govee Christmas lights work with Matter and Apple Home?
Govee lists Matter support for Christmas String Lights 2, alongside Alexa and Google Home, and Matter is how they can join Apple Home. Govee's page for the Christmas Tree Lights lists Matter in the description but not in its comparison chart, so check the box before buying for an Apple Home setup.
What does mapping do on smart Christmas lights?
Mapping tells the app where each LED physically sits on the tree, so effects such as sweeps, rising bubbles or drawings land in the right place instead of following the strand from end to end. Twinkly maps with the phone camera while the user walks around the tree. Govee String Lights 2 offer shape mapping through the Govee app, and Govee's Tree Lights get the same benefit from their fixed vertical layout.
Do smart RGB Christmas lights have a true warm white?
Not all of them. Plain RGB sets, including the RGB version of Twinkly Strings, mix white from red, green and blue chips, which often looks slightly off. Govee's String Lights 2 use RGBWIC beads with a separate warm white LED, which gives a cleaner classic white. For the reasons LED whites and colors can look harsh, see the guide to LED vs. incandescent Christmas lights.
