Permanent outdoor lights mount under the eaves once and stay there all year: warm white for everyday porch light, red and green in December, team colors on game day. The big-name kits get most of the attention, but three other brands make strong alternatives, each with a clear strength. Nanoleaf has the cleanest finished look and works with Matter. Enbrighten Eternity has a wide white range and plain, sturdy hardware. ASAHOM packs the most lights per foot and runs WLED for the deepest animation controls.

This guide compares the three on apps and smart-home support, white light, installation, mounting and weather ratings, and explains which home each one suits best.

What actually separates permanent lights

App control and smart-home support

Every permanent kit has its own app, and that app is where the scenes, effects and per-light colors live. Smart-home support decides what else can control the lights.

Nanoleaf is the only one of the three that supports Matter. That lets it join Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey, Aqara or any other Matter platform, and it also works over Thread. Through Matter you get the basics: on and off, brightness and one color across the whole run. The scene library and per-puck effects stay in the Nanoleaf app.

ASAHOM runs a customized version of WLED, the open-source LED software, and it can also boot into standard WLED. It works with Alexa and Google Home, but not Matter.

Enbrighten uses its own app on Wi-Fi, and only the 2.4 GHz band. Most dual-band routers handle that on their own; a router with separate network names needs the lights joined to the 2.4 GHz one.

White light quality

White light matters more than color on a permanent kit, because white is what most homes run most nights. Cheap RGB strips mix white from red, green and blue diodes, and that mixed white usually looks a little blue. All three of these kits avoid that problem. Each Nanoleaf puck has three warm white and three cool white LEDs next to its color LED. ASAHOM also uses dedicated warm and cool white LEDs. Enbrighten's white tunes from a candle-like 2200K to a crisp 6000K.

Brightness is not a weak spot either. Each Nanoleaf puck is rated at 50 lumens, and the Enbrighten lights are bright enough at full power to flood the front of a house. Around 30% brightness at 5000K gives a soft, even wash for security lighting.

Installation and splicing

The hardest part of any permanent install is planning: the run has to end near an outlet, and it has to get around corners, gables and second-story jumps without a string of lights where none should be.

ASAHOM is the easiest to fit to a real roofline. Instead of only standard long strings, its 200 ft kit mixes eight 12-LED strings, six shorter 6-LED strings and twelve single-LED pieces, plus extension wires in 6 ft, 3 ft and 1 ft lengths. Those pieces cover most gaps without cutting. Nanoleaf takes the cut-and-cap approach: cut the strip, add a plain cable section to skip a stretch (such as the wall up to a second floor), and seal the cut with the caps in the box. Enbrighten's lights are cuttable too, but a cut string is hard to rejoin without electrical work, so plan the layout before cutting. Its strings connect with screw-down couplings instead.

Row of permanent outdoor LED light pucks mounted evenly along a white soffit with the cable clipped neatly between them

Mounting and the finished look

All three mount on the underside of the soffit and shine down, washing the wall below in cones of light. Nanoleaf's pucks are about three inches from the wall in a typical install, and the kit includes a small ruler so every puck sits the same distance from the edge.

The biggest visual difference is the cable. On most kits the wire between lights hangs in small loops no matter how tight it is pulled. Nanoleaf includes plastic covers that clip over the cable after installation, in white or black to match the soffit, and they make the run look built in. Enbrighten offers cable clips to stop droop when lights are spaced closer than the full string length. Aftermarket channel covers exist for ASAHOM and other brands.

Weather ratings

Enbrighten rates its lights IP67 and its power supply IP65, so the power supply belongs somewhere covered, like a porch ceiling or a covered deck. The LEDs sit in sealed plastic with silicone-filled backs on heavy wires. The kit also lists ETL certification and NFPA 70 National Electrical Code requirements for outdoor wet locations. Nanoleaf's outdoor controller is IP67 and its pucks are about IP65. ASAHOM's listing rates the Pro kit IP67, with an operating range of -22°F to 113°F. None of these is meant to sit underwater; under an eave they stay out of most rain.

Nanoleaf Matter Permanent Outdoor Lights

Nanoleaf's kit is the one to buy when the lights should look like part of the house. Each puck has an adhesive back plus screw holes in four orientations, and adding a screw every second or third puck means one weak spot of adhesive can't pull down the run. The cable covers are the standout detail. The outdoor controller is a big waterproof button that turns the lights on, changes brightness and cycles scenes, handy for anyone on the patio without a phone.

The app has many built-in scenes, single colors, per-puck color control and a community library of scenes other owners have shared. Changes between scenes fade instead of snapping over, which looks calmer on a house. Colors are rich and the whites look clean. Runs go up to 147 ft, and a second run gives nearly 300 ft around a larger house. The real drawback: these lights are part of Nanoleaf's Essentials line, and the Nanoleaf app gives Essentials products no schedules. Schedules have to be set in Alexa, Google Home or another Matter platform. A smart plug on the power supply is a blunt fallback, but it only switches power on and off.

Enbrighten Eternity Permanent Outdoor Lights 150 ft

The Eternity kit is built around brackets: stick each one to the eave with its 3M tape, drive the supplied screw through the center, then snap the light in. A light is hard to pop back out once it clicks in, and a thin flathead screwdriver does the job. Lights can sit at any spacing up to the string length. Using the full gap spreads them out and saves clips, while a tighter layout looks fuller and needs the included cable clips to stop droop.

The box includes the strings, brackets, screws, cable clips, power supply anchors, a 10 ft extension cable and both plastic and silicone end caps. The end cap snugs up but does not tighten fully, so a dab of outdoor silicone at the last connection is cheap insurance. White tunes from 2200K to 6000K, and the app handles solid colors, per-light colors and holiday presets such as Christmas, Halloween, summer and fall. Linked runs reach 200 ft on a single power supply. The kit comes in white or black, and it carries a lifetime warranty.

ASAHOM Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro 100 ft

ASAHOM's Pro kit is the one for people who want their lights to move. The pucks sit 16.5 inches apart, center to center, which is tighter than the common big-brand kits at 20 and 32.5 inches. More lights per foot make animations smoother. WLED goes further than typical holiday-light apps: each effect opens settings for speed, color palette and, on effects like Meteor, trail length, and any effect can run in reverse or mirror from the middle. A text prompt can also make scenes, such as "ocean waves."

The other draw is length. Many kits stop at 200 ft per controller, while ASAHOM's power injection reaches up to 800 ft on one controller, enough for a large house or a house plus a detached garage. White light is solid, with dedicated warm and cool white diodes, and it holds up well next to the best white light in the category. The trade-offs: no Matter certification, and a small product line, so it can't sync with matching wall lights or curtain lights the way the largest brands can. Shoppers who want that whole-house matching should read the guide to Govee, Lumary and Eufy permanent lights.

Install tips that apply to any kit

  • Map the run first. Measure every roofline section and mark where the run will start and end. The end of the run with the power cord has to land near an outlet.
  • Clean before you stick. Wash the soffit with soap and water, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol. Adhesive grips far better on a clean, dry surface.
  • Screw as well as stick. Adhesive alone is a single point of failure. A screw on some or all of the mounts stops one failure from bringing down a whole section.
  • Keep spacing even. Use a ruler or a cut piece of scrap as a gauge so each light sits the same distance from the wall and from its neighbor.
  • Shelter the power supply. Mount it under a covered porch or deck, and seal any end cap that doesn't fully tighten.
  • Check Wi-Fi at the roofline. The controller sits outside, often at a corner of the house. If the signal is weak there, plan for a mesh node or an extender.

Not ready to commit to a permanent install? Seasonal strands on shingle, ridge or gutter clips come down after the holidays without leaving hardware behind.

Who should buy which

  • A clean, finished look and an existing Alexa, Google Home or Home Assistant setup: Nanoleaf Matter Permanent Outdoor Lights. Plan to set schedules in the smart-home app.
  • Mostly white light for security and curb appeal, with holiday colors now and then: Enbrighten Eternity 150 ft, with its wide white range and lifetime warranty.
  • Light shows, the smoothest animations, or a roofline longer than 200 ft: ASAHOM Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro 100 ft.
  • Matching lights across walls, windows and the garage: a larger brand with a wider product line, covered in the Govee, Lumary and Eufy guide linked above.

Frequently asked questions

Do Nanoleaf permanent outdoor lights work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes. The Nanoleaf Matter Permanent Outdoor Lights support Matter and Thread, so they connect to Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey, Aqara and other Matter platforms. Those platforms get on and off, brightness and a single color for the whole run. Scenes, per-puck effects and the community scene library stay in the Nanoleaf app.

Can Nanoleaf permanent outdoor lights run on a schedule?

Not from the Nanoleaf app. These lights belong to Nanoleaf's Essentials line, which has no app schedules. Set the schedule in Alexa, Google Home or another Matter platform instead, where the lights can also be grouped with other outdoor lighting.

Does Enbrighten Eternity work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Enbrighten Eternity lights connect only to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Most dual-band routers handle that automatically. If the router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, join the lights to the 2.4 GHz network.

Are Enbrighten Eternity lights waterproof?

They are weatherproof, not submersible. The light strings are rated IP67 and the power supply IP65, so the power supply should sit somewhere covered, such as a porch ceiling or covered deck. The kit lists ETL certification and NFPA 70 requirements for outdoor wet locations. A bead of outdoor silicone on the end cap adds protection, since the cap does not tighten fully.

What makes ASAHOM permanent lights different?

ASAHOM runs a customized version of WLED, with the option to boot into standard WLED, so effects can be tuned for speed, palette, trail length, direction and mirroring. Its lights are spaced 16.5 inches apart for smoother animation, its kits include short strings and single-LED pieces that reduce cutting, and power injection allows up to 800 feet on one controller. It works with Alexa and Google Home but is not Matter certified.

Which permanent outdoor lights have the best white light?

All three avoid the bluish white of plain RGB strips. Nanoleaf and ASAHOM use dedicated warm white and cool white LEDs, and Enbrighten Eternity tunes from 2200K to 6000K. For a soft everyday wash, Enbrighten at around 5000K and 30% brightness lights the front of a house without flooding it.
