Christmas Light Clips: Shingle Tabs vs. Ridge Clips vs. Gutter Clips
Which Christmas light clips work on gutters, shingles and roof ridges: shingle tabs, ridge clips, Tuff Clips, HLO V2 rings and universal clips explained.
Clips decide whether a roofline display looks like a professional install or a weekend project. The same string of C9 bulbs can stand in a straight, evenly spaced row along the gutter, or it can droop, tilt and bunch up on the ridges. The clip under each bulb is what makes the difference, and the right one depends on two things: where the lights go (gutter, shingles or ridge) and whether the bulbs screw out of the sockets.
This guide covers the main clip styles for gutters, shingles and roof ridges: universal clips for store-bought strings, shingle tabs, Tuff Clips, spanning ridge clips and ring-style V2 clips. It explains where each one works, where it falls short, and how to keep that even spacing all the way around the house.

Quick verdict
- Best for roof ridges: the Brilliant Brand Ridge Line Clips. They straddle the ridge, keep 12 in spacing, point bulbs up and never require lifting a shingle.
- Best for gutters with removable bulbs: the HLO V2 Clips for C9 (E17 sockets). The ring locks onto the socket, so clips, bulbs and wire come down together every year.
- Best for gutters and shingles on C9 light line: Tuff Clips for C9 Light Line (100 Pack). One clip hooks a gutter or slides its tip under a shingle.
- The classic ridge tab: HLO Shingle Tabs (C7/C9), the pro standard for shingles. Expect tight spacing on ridges.
- Store-bought strings with fixed bulbs: the Brightown Universal Light Clips (100 Pack), the budget clip that fits lights whose bulbs don't come out.

Start here: can the bulbs come out?
Most of the clip decision comes down to the lights themselves. Ordinary store-bought C9 strings have bulbs sealed into the cord. Professional installs use empty-socket light line: a bare cord with sockets at a fixed spacing (12 in is the standard), cut to length, with bulbs screwed in by hand.
That difference sets which clips fit. Shingle tabs, Tuff Clips and V2 ring clips all sit between the bulb and the socket, so they only work when the bulb unscrews. With fixed bulbs, the only option is a universal clip that snaps around the socket from the outside. Universal clips can also be retrofitted onto ridges, but they hold the socket loosely, so the bulbs dangle and lean instead of standing straight. On light line, screwing the bulb in pulls it snug against the clip, and every bulb stands upright.
Spacing also differs. Many store-bought strings put bulbs about 6 in apart, half the spacing of standard light line. For bulb sizes and shapes, see this guide to C3 vs. C6 vs. C7 vs. C9 Christmas lights.

Gutter clips: why cheap clips fail over time
The standard store-bought gutter clip works the first year. The problem comes later. The thin plastic stretches out season after season, and snow load or a bump can pop the lights out. Taking them down is the worst part: in cold places most people pull the strand down from the ground rather than climb up and unhook each clip. The stretched clips let go of the lights and stay hooked on the gutter, to be scraped off one at a time.
Two upgrades fix this. For fixed-bulb strings, a thicker, springier clip grips much harder than the thin ones and jams firmly into the gutter. For removable bulbs, a ring-style clip goes over the socket before the bulb is screwed in, which locks the clip to the light. It still hooks over the gutter the same way, but when the strand comes down, every clip comes with it, and it stays on that socket year after year.
Shingle tabs on ridges: the spacing problem
Shingle tabs are the clip most pros use on ridges. The bulb screws in over the tab, and the tab slides under a ridge shingle. They work, but they have three drawbacks.
They force tight spacing
On many roofs, ridge cap shingles are only about 6¼ to 6½ in wide, and a tab has to slide into a seam between them. A light line with 12 in spacing won't line up with those seams, so the cord has to be bunched to put a bulb at every shingle, about every 6¼ in. That means twice the bulbs on the ridge, and the ridges no longer match the 12 in spacing on the gutters. From the street, the mismatch is easy to see.
New roofs fight back
On a newer roof, the shingles are still sealed down tight. Some have to be pried up to get a tab under, and some won't take a tab at all, which leaves gaps in the spacing. Prying up shingles is something most homeowners would rather not do.
Install them gently
Where tabs (or Tuff Clips) go under shingles, slide in only the bent tip. Don't hammer a tab up under the shingle. The tip alone holds well, keeps the bulb pointed up, and doesn't damage the roof.
Spanning ridge clips: the cleaner fix
A spanning ridge clip sits over the ridge cap like a saddle instead of tucking under a shingle. Because it doesn't depend on the shingle seams, it can go anywhere along the ridge, so the light line keeps its factory 12 in spacing from the gutters right over the ridges. The bulbs point up, which looks brighter from the ground, and the roof is never lifted or pried.
They look a little flimsy in the hand, but they grip the bulb firmly and stay put in wind. Their one drawback is bulk: loading them onto the cord ahead of time turns into a tangled mess. They go on faster attached one by one on the roof.

How to handle a roof peak
Where two rooflines meet at a peak, a few rules keep it looking right:
- Put a bulb dead center on the peak. An off-center bulb at the top is the first thing the eye catches.
- Split the spacing evenly on both sides. It's fine to bunch the bulbs closer (around 6 in) just around the peak so the sides match, then go back to 12 in spacing down each slope.
- Mix clips where needed. If the shingles at the peak are too tight for a tab, remove the tab from that bulb and use a spanning ridge clip there. From the ground, nobody can tell two clip styles are in use.
The picks in detail
Brilliant Brand Ridge Line Clips
This is the clip to use on ridges. It snaps on over the ridge rather than under the shingles, so it's damage-free and keeps 12 in spacing regardless of shingle width. The listing says it fits most 3-tab and architectural shingles, most 10 in and 12 in ridge vents and many metal roofs, and holds C6, C7, C9, mini, pixel and rope lights. Attach them on the roof, not in advance.

HLO V2 Clips for C9 (E17 sockets)
The V2 is the ring-style clip. The ring slides over the socket and the bulb screws in on top, so the clip stays on the socket until the bulb comes out. It hooks over gutters and works on shingles, holding each bulb upright. The real payoff is takedown: pull the strand from the ground and clips, bulbs and wire all come down together, with nothing left on the gutter. It only fits removable C9 bulbs in E17 sockets.

Tuff Clips for C9 Light Line (100 Pack)
Tuff Clips go on the bulb base before the bulb screws into the socket. One clip handles both jobs: it hooks over a gutter edge, and its bent tab slides under a shingle. Push in only the tip. They're made for C9 empty-socket light line only, not pre-lamped strings, and the listing says they cut install and removal time roughly in half. At peaks where the shingles are too tight for the tab, swap in a ridge clip.

HLO Shingle Tabs (C7/C9)
The traditional pro tab. It sits between the bulb and socket, and its two legs wedge into shingles, gutters or deck rails, with a flip of the tab for a firmer grip. It works well along shingled eaves. On ridges, expect bulbs every 6¼ to 6½ in and some prying on newer roofs. It will not hold bulbs that are fixed into the cord.

Brightown Universal Light Clips (100 Pack)
This is the clip for ordinary store-bought strings. It snaps around the outside of the socket, so it works with C9, C7 and mini lights whose bulbs don't come out. It mounts flat on gutters or upright on shingles. As with any thin universal clip, expect some bulb lean, and unhook it by hand at takedown instead of yanking the strand from the ground, which stretches clips like these over the years.
Install tips for a professional look
- Keep spacing even everywhere. Consistent 12 in spacing around the gutters and over the ridges is what makes a display look professional from the street.
- Pick one clip system per area. Ring clips or Tuff Clips on gutters, ridge clips on ridges, and a ridge clip as the fix wherever a tab won't go.
- Check every bulb is tight. On light line, a bulb that isn't fully screwed in leaves a dark hole in the row.
- Time it right. Hanging on a dry, mild day is easier and safer. See the best time to hang Christmas lights.
- Thinking about skipping clips altogether? Permanent track lighting is another option. See Govee vs. Lumary vs. Eufy permanent outdoor lights.
Safety notes
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's holiday safety guidance warns never to string together more than three sets of incandescent lights and not to overload outlets. It also recommends flameless candles whenever possible. Roof work brings its own risks: set ladders on firm, level ground, avoid wet, icy or windy days, wear shoes with good grip, and have someone on the ground to help.

Frequently asked questions
What clips do professionals use for Christmas lights on a roof?
Most professional installs use empty-socket C9 light line with clips that sit between the bulb and the socket, such as shingle tabs or ring-style gutter clips. On ridges, spanning ridge clips are a cleaner option than tabs because they keep 12 in spacing and never lift a shingle.
How do you hang Christmas lights on a roof ridge without damaging shingles?
Use a spanning ridge clip that sits over the ridge cap instead of tucking under it. Nothing has to be pried up, and the clip can go anywhere along the ridge. If tabs are used, slide only the tip under the shingle rather than forcing the whole tab in.
Why don't 12 inch spaced lights line up with shingle tab clips on a ridge?
Ridge cap shingles are only about 6¼ to 6½ in wide, and each tab needs a seam to slide into. A 12 in bulb spacing won't land on those seams, so the cord has to be bunched to roughly 6 in spacing, which doubles the bulbs and no longer matches the gutters.
Do shingle tab clips work with store-bought Christmas lights?
No. Shingle tabs, Tuff Clips and ring-style clips fit between a removable bulb and its socket. Store-bought strings with bulbs sealed into the cord need universal clips that snap around the outside of the socket instead.
Why do Christmas light clips stay on the gutter when the lights come down?
Thin plastic clips stretch out over several seasons. When a strand is pulled down from the ground, stretched clips release the lights and stay hooked on the gutter. Ring-style clips locked onto the socket, or thicker, springier clips, avoid this.
How should Christmas lights be spaced at a roof peak?
Place one bulb exactly at the top of the peak, then space the bulbs evenly on both sides, bunching them a little near the peak if needed. Return to normal 12 in spacing down each slope. Where a tab won't fit at the peak, a ridge clip holds that bulb instead.
