Two of Utah's biggest holiday light events have already published their 2026 calendars. Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point runs November 12, 2026 through January 9, 2027, and Ogden's Christmas Village switches on November 28, 2026 and stays lit through New Year's Day. Most other displays post their schedules in November, so a family planning December evenings now has to work from a mix of confirmed dates and last season's patterns.

This roundup is organized by region, so readers can plan one or two outings close to home instead of crisscrossing the Wasatch Front. Each entry notes what is confirmed for 2026 and what is still based on the 2025 season. The last section covers something most light guides skip: December nights are one of the most revealing times to look at neighborhoods for anyone shopping for a home this winter.

What Is Confirmed for 2026 So Far

As of mid-October, these details come straight from the organizers' own pages:

  • Luminaria, Lehi: November 12, 2026 to January 9, 2027. Open Monday through Saturday; closed Sundays, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Presale runs October 1–31.
  • Christmas Village, Ogden: Opens November 28, 2026, with the last day on January 1, 2027. Free admission.

Everything else below should be treated as a preview. Organizers such as Temple Square, Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary typically announce dates closer to Thanksgiving, and hours, prices and even locations can shift from one year to the next.

Utah County

Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point (Lehi)

Luminaria is a timed-entry walk through Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point, spread across roughly 50 acres of the garden grounds. Thanksgiving Point suggests budgeting at least an hour and a half for the full route, plus another 30 to 45 minutes for the optional Tree of Life garden. Early-season hours (November 12–24) run from 4 to 9 p.m., and the final week in January shifts to 5 to 8:30 p.m. Ticket prices vary by date and are shown when a date is selected, so weeknights in November are usually the easier, less crowded choice. Thanksgiving Point members receive more than 10% off regular-season tickets, and add-ons such as reserved fire pits and igloos are sold separately.

Luminaria sits at the north end of Lehi, close to I-15 and the Traverse Mountain area. Residents nearby can expect busier evenings on the roads around Thanksgiving Point while the event runs, which is worth knowing for buyers comparing homes in that corridor.

Christmas in Color (American Fork)

This drive-through show added an American Fork location in 2025 at Mary and Art Dye Park, alongside its long-running Salt Lake County show. Visitors stay in their cars for a roughly half-hour route of lights synced to music, and tickets are sold online in advance. The 2026 dates had not been posted at the time of writing.

Salt Lake County

Temple Square (Salt Lake City)

The lights on and around Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City are among the oldest holiday traditions in the state, and they are free. In 2025 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lit the open areas of the square daily from 6 to 8 a.m. and 4:30 to 10 p.m., starting the Friday after Thanksgiving and running through New Year's Day. Renovation of the Salt Lake Temple has limited which areas are open in recent seasons. The Church no longer holds a formal lighting ceremony, so the lights simply come on when the season begins. Expect the 2026 schedule to be announced in November.

ZooLights at Hogle Zoo

ZooLights runs on select nights only, which catches some families off guard. Last season it ran from late November into the first weekend of January, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., with adult tickets at $19.95 and children 3–12 at $16.95. The zoo also hosted a sensory-friendly evening in late December. The 2026 calendar had not been posted by mid-October.

Lightwalk at Tracy Aviary

Tracy Aviary's Lightwalk turns its Liberty Park grounds into a walking route of lights, with a light tunnel along the way. In 2025, admission was $17.95 for adults and $13.95 for children 3–12, and the aviary closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Because it sits inside Liberty Park, Lightwalk pairs easily with dinner in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Draper City Park

Draper City Park, at 12500 South 1300 East, is known for a weeping willow wrapped in tens of thousands of white lights, which many visitors call the Tree of Life. The display is free. In 2025 the park was lit from 5 to 10 p.m. and again from 5 to 8 a.m., ending January 1. It is a popular spot for proposals and family photos, so weekend evenings fill up early.

Davis and Weber Counties

Christmas Village (Ogden)

Downtown Ogden has the most fully published 2026 schedule of any display in this list. Opening day, November 28, 2026, starts with a Santa Run on Washington Boulevard at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Holiday Electric Light Parade at 5:30 p.m. between 22nd and 27th streets. A short ceremony on the amphitheater stage around 6:30 p.m. ends with fireworks and the lights turning on.

  • Hours: Lights come on daily at 5 p.m. and go off at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at midnight on Friday and Saturday, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's.
  • Santa: Visits run November 28 through December 23, weekday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m.
  • Parking: Free street parking around the village, plus the Municipal Building lot at 2549 Washington Boulevard, reached from 26th Street.
  • Cost: Free.

Lights Before Christmas (Layton)

Layton lights Layton Commons Park, 465 North Wasatch Drive, for its free Lights Before Christmas display. In 2025 the city opened the season on November 24 with school choirs and the community band in a heated pavilion, then kept the park lit nightly from dusk until 11 p.m. through December 31. Past seasons have included free hayrides through the display. Check the Layton City community calendar in November for 2026 details.

Fantasy at the Bay (Willard Bay State Park)

North of Ogden, Willard Bay State Park has hosted a drive-through light show called Fantasy at the Bay, with lights spread through the park's campground and music played over car radios. Dates and pricing have varied a good deal from year to year, so this one is best confirmed with Utah State Parks before driving up.

Southern Utah

St. George Temple Grounds

In St. George, the temple grounds at 490 South 300 East returned to holiday lighting in 2024 after the temple's renovation and rededication, the first display there in five years. In 2025 the season opened November 28, with short nightly music programs at the visitors' center through December 22. Visitors can walk the grounds afterward. The 2026 schedule had not been announced by mid-October.

Red Hills Desert Garden

Red Hills Desert Garden, a water-conservation demonstration garden at 375 East Red Hills Parkway, adds holiday lights each winter. A 2026 event listing shows the lights running nightly from November 25 through December 31 until 10 p.m., with free admission. Desert plants make a very different backdrop from the snow-covered displays up north.

Christmas in the Canyon at Tuacahn (Ivins)

Tuacahn's outdoor amphitheater complex in Ivins has hosted Christmas in the Canyon for years. In 2024 admission to the grounds was free, while the live nativity ($5) and short train rides ($3) were paid extras. The 2026 program had not been posted at the time of writing; Tuacahn's box office is the place to confirm it.

Using Light Season to Scout Neighborhoods

Most home tours happen on weekend afternoons, which is when a neighborhood looks its best. December evenings show the rest of the picture. Anyone house hunting this winter can turn a trip to see the lights into a useful scouting run.

What to look for after dark

  • Street lighting. Newer subdivisions and older city grids light their streets very differently. Some rural-feeling areas on the edges of Utah County and Davis County have few streetlights at all, which some buyers love and others find isolating.
  • Traffic near big attractions. Homes close to Thanksgiving Point, downtown Ogden or Draper City Park see heavier evening traffic for six weeks a year. That matters more for a daily commute than for a once-a-season visit.
  • Winter driving. Steep streets and north-facing driveways that look harmless in October can be slick in December. A drive through the same neighborhood after a storm shows how quickly the city plows residential streets.
  • How a street celebrates. Some neighborhoods coordinate lights, luminaries or open-house nights; others are quiet. Neither is better, but it says something about how neighbors interact. KSL has published a statewide map of home light displays in recent seasons, which makes it easier to find streets known for their decorations.
  • Decoration rules. In HOA communities, the CC&Rs may limit when lights go up, how long they stay, and whether anything can be attached to the roof or fascia. Buyers should read those rules before closing rather than after the first notice arrives.

For homeowners already planning their own displays, timing and safety are covered in a separate guide on when to hang Christmas lights.

Questions to ask during a December showing

A winter showing is also a chance to ask questions that rarely come up in summer. How high did the gas bill run last January? Where do ice dams form on the roof, if anywhere? Are the exterior outlets on their own circuit, and do they trip when the lights and a space heater run at once? A seller who has lived through several Utah winters in the house usually has useful answers.

Planning Tips for the 2026 Season

  • Buy timed tickets early for Luminaria if a specific weekend matters; the October presale is the cheapest window.
  • Go on weeknights wherever possible. Free displays such as Ogden's Christmas Village and Draper City Park are much calmer Monday through Thursday.
  • Check official pages the week of the visit. Hours, closures and weather cancellations change during the season.
  • Dress for the walk. Luminaria, Lightwalk and ZooLights are all on foot, and Wasatch Front evenings in December regularly drop below freezing.

Families weighing a move can browse homes near any of these displays on Best Utah Real Estate, then visit the area on a December evening to see how it feels once the sun goes down.

Frequently asked questions

When does Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point run in 2026?

Thanksgiving Point lists the 2026 season as November 12, 2026 through January 9, 2027. It is open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Entry is timed, and the presale with the lowest prices runs October 1–31.

Is Ogden's Christmas Village free?

Yes. Ogden City lists Christmas Village as free for all visitors, and Santa visits are free too. For 2026 it opens November 28 with a Santa Run, a light parade and fireworks, and the last day is January 1, 2027.

What time are the Ogden Christmas Village lights on?

The lights come on daily at 5 p.m. They turn off at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at midnight on Friday and Saturday, and they stay on over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's.

Which free Christmas light displays are there in Utah?

Free displays in recent seasons include Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Draper City Park, Ogden's Christmas Village, Layton's Lights Before Christmas at Layton Commons Park, and the St. George Temple grounds. Red Hills Desert Garden in St. George also lists free admission for 2026. Tickets are required for Luminaria, ZooLights and Tracy Aviary's Lightwalk.

Have Temple Square and Hogle Zoo announced their 2026 holiday light dates?

Not as of mid-October 2026. In 2025, Temple Square was lit from November 28 through January 1, and ZooLights ran select nights from late November to January 4. Both organizations usually post the new season's details in November, so check their official pages before going.

Why look at neighborhoods during holiday light season?

Evening drives in December show things a weekend showing does not: street lighting, traffic near big attractions, how quickly residential streets are plowed, and how icy steep or north-facing driveways get. In HOA communities, it is also a good time to read the CC&Rs for rules on holiday decorations.
