An air fryer toaster oven is a convection toaster oven with a fan strong enough, and a mesh basket open enough, to crisp food the way a basket air fryer does. The good ones also toast evenly and bake a frozen pizza on the box timing. The weak ones burn the second round of toast, leave pizza cheese unmelted in the middle and smoke every time something fatty goes in the basket.

This guide compares the countertop ovens worth a spot on the counter: Breville, Ninja, Cuisinart and Typhur air fryer ovens, plus a compact Breville and a few budget alternatives.

Air fryer toaster oven vs. air fryer

An air fryer is a small convection oven. A fan pushes hot air around food sitting in a perforated basket, and a teaspoon or tablespoon of oil, or none, is enough to get a crisp outside. It is not deep frying and won't fully match it, but the outside still turns crisp and golden. An air fryer toaster oven does the same thing with a mesh basket on a rack, and adds toast, bake, broil, roast and multiple rack levels.

A toaster oven has to preheat before air frying, while a basket air fryer skips it or takes one to three minutes. A toaster oven's stainless mesh basket is not nonstick, so grease sticks in the wires and the interior needs wiping too. If air frying is all you want, a basket air fryer is smaller, cheaper and easier to clean. If you also want real toast, pizza and a second oven on holidays, the combination makes sense, but pick carefully: plenty of toaster ovens with an air fry button don't crisp food well.

Where these ovens differ

Toast evenness

The hard part of toast is the second round, when a hot oven can scorch bread on the same timer. The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro and the Typhur both shorten the second cycle on their own; the Breville's second batch matches the first. The Ninja runs the same time every round. The analog Cuisinart TOA-70's second batch came out only a bit crispier and darker, not burnt. Its tops brown a little more evenly than the bottoms.

Air fry results and smoke

Where the drip tray sits decides how much an oven smokes. The Typhur crisps food the hardest, but its drip tray sits close to the lower heating elements, so fat from pork belly burned and smoked. The Ninja's drip tray sits farther from the elements, so it barely smoked, even if it crisped slightly less. The Cuisinart's basket legs stand on the drip tray, so both lift out together without dripping grease on the elements or counter. On the Breville, the roasting pan under the basket is narrower than the basket, so fatty food near the edges can drip past it. Keep food toward the center.

Pizza and baking

The Ninja cooked a frozen pizza right on the box instructions with even browning. The Cuisinart's bake mode finished one in about 15 minutes, faster than the box said, with no hot spots. The Typhur is so fast that an 18-minute box time burned the pizza; it needed about 9. The Breville's included pizza pan gives a crisp, evenly browned crust, but its side-mounted fan doesn't melt cheese as well as the Cuisinart's top-mounted fan.

Preheat speed

The Ninja and the Typhur reach temperature fastest; the Ninja's preheat takes 90 seconds. The Breville is slower to preheat and slower to air fry, likely due to a small door gap.

Controls: dials vs. digital

The Cuisinart's four mechanical dials are hard to get wrong, and basic cooking times are printed on the glass door. The Breville pairs dials with a clear LCD and pauses the timer when the door opens while keeping the elements hot. The Ninja and Breville remember time and temperature for each mode; the Ninja keeps them even after it is unplugged. The Typhur only remembers the last custom setting, then goes back to defaults when the mode changes.

The picks in detail

Ninja French Door Premier Air Fry Oven (FO101)

The most balanced oven of the group comes with a deep 5-quart air fry basket, sheet pan, broil rack, wire rack and crumb tray. There are only two rack positions, so there isn't much to learn.

The deep basket handles a big batch of fries or pork belly with little smoke, and cleanup is easy. The weak spot is toast. There's no app or probe, and setting a cook takes one extra step, but the big dial makes adjusting time and temperature quick.

Cuisinart TOA-70 Air Fryer Toaster Oven

The Cuisinart doesn't need a touchscreen to cook well. It runs 1,800 watts, toasts six slices and uses four dials and a 60-minute timer.

Results are even across the board. A 3-pound whole chicken at 350°F, flipped at 20 minutes, was done at 40 with juicy meat and very crisp skin. Twelve ounces of frozen fries at 400°F took 15 minutes, with one shake at 10, and came out evenly golden. Four slices of toast took 5 minutes on medium. The bottom tray pulls out without opening the door, and most of the parts are dishwasher safe. It lacks presets, memory and the extra modes of the digital ovens.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (BOV900BSS)

Element iQ spreads power across five quartz elements, and the super convection fan has two speeds. Its 13 functions include proof, slow cook and dehydrate, and it holds six slices of toast or a 13-inch pizza. The rack slides forward on its own when the door opens, so grabbing toast doesn't mean reaching into the heat.

Toast comes out evenly golden, crisp outside and soft inside. Air fried chicken and fries turn golden and crisp, though about 25°F more heat gives a better finish. The downsides are speed, the narrow drip pan and the size. One tray's enamel chipped after a single drop.

Typhur Sync Air Fryer Oven

The Typhur is the most high-tech oven here. A wireless food probe sends the internal temperature to an app, where you set a target or a protein preset and get a notice when food is done. The probe reads slightly low but consistently, so the offset is easy to learn. Set targets from the safe minimum internal temperatures.

It includes a wide, shallow air fry basket, baking pan, wire rack, crumb tray, probe and an oven mitt, and the display names the right rack for each mode. The shallow basket makes food easy to lay flat and flip. The catches are smoke from fatty food, box times that overcook and no per-mode memory.

Breville Mini Smart Oven (BOV450XL)

For a small kitchen, the Mini Smart Oven is a toaster oven first. It has Element iQ with five quartz elements, 1,800 watts and 8 functions, including pizza, cookies and reheat. It has no convection fan, so there's no air fry mode.

Its toast cycle is one of the fastest of any oven here. The second batch still comes out a bit darker even after the oven shortens the time, so step the shade down one notch. In pizza mode, a pizza was done in about 5½ minutes with a golden, crisp crust, and chicken wings came out crisp and juicy after 40 minutes.

Other ovens worth knowing

  • Black+Decker CTO6335S Convection Toaster Oven: a sturdy budget convection oven with an easy-clean interior. A 3-pound chicken roasted for an hour at 350°F stayed juicy; go to 400 to 425°F for darker skin. At 1,500 watts it is weak on frozen fries, so run them at its 450°F maximum.
  • Panasonic FlashXpress NB-G110P: very fast, with a rack that slides out as the door opens. A pizza takes about 3 minutes, but the toppings brown before the crust is done, so drop from 450°F to about 430°F. Use the lowest toast setting.
  • Nuwave Bravo Pro: splits heat between top and bottom and adjusts fan speed, but the default toast setting runs hot, pizza edges finish before the center melts, the short basket legs limit airflow, and there's no oven light.
  • Ninja Foodi XL Pro DT201: a large air fry oven that fits a 12-pound turkey and cooks on two levels at once. Fries need a shake partway, and the interior isn't fully nonstick.
  • Emeril Dual Zone 360: a divider splits it into two zones with their own settings that can finish at the same time. It is the most complicated to use, and its accessories are mostly hand-wash.

Capacity and counter space

Measure before buying. The large ovens need a deep stretch of counter plus clearance on all sides for venting, and French doors need room in front. If counter space is tight and toast is the main job, the Mini Smart Oven fits where the big ones won't, and if toast is the only job, a pop-up toaster takes even less room.

Cleaning and care

  • Empty the crumb tray often; built-up crumbs can smoke.
  • Soak stainless mesh baskets in hot soapy water before scrubbing; grease sticks in the wires.
  • Check which parts are dishwasher safe; the Cuisinart's mostly are.
  • Wipe the interior and glass once cool, before grease bakes on.

Next on the counter: a high-powered blender.

Who should buy which

  • One oven that does everything well: the Ninja French Door Premier.
  • Great results on a budget, simple dials: the Cuisinart TOA-70.
  • Even toast and a premium build: the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro.
  • Probe cooking and app alerts: the Typhur Sync.
  • A small kitchen that mostly toasts: the Breville Mini Smart Oven.
  • Mostly air frying: skip the toaster oven and get a basket air fryer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best air fryer toaster oven?

The Ninja French Door Premier Air Fry Oven (FO101) is the best all-around pick. It preheats in about 90 seconds, cooks frozen pizza on the box timing, smokes little with fatty food thanks to a drip tray set well below the basket, and remembers time and temperature for each mode. The Cuisinart TOA-70 is the best budget choice, and the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro makes the most consistent toast.

Is a toaster oven air fryer better than a basket air fryer?

It depends on what you cook. A basket air fryer is smaller, easier to clean and quicker to heat, so it wins if air frying is the main job. An air fryer toaster oven also toasts, bakes, broils and holds a pizza, so it can replace a toaster and act as a second oven, at the cost of more counter space and a stainless basket that isn't nonstick.

Do air fryer toaster ovens need to preheat?

Yes. Most air fryer toaster ovens preheat before air frying, while many basket air fryers skip it or take one to three minutes. Preheat speed varies a lot between ovens; the Ninja French Door Premier takes about 90 seconds, while the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is noticeably slower.

Can the Breville Mini Smart Oven air fry?

No. The Breville Mini Smart Oven (BOV450XL) has no convection fan and no air fry mode. Its 8 functions include pizza, cookies and reheat, and its toast cycle is very fast, which makes it a good fit for small kitchens that mostly toast and reheat.

Why does my air fryer toaster oven smoke?

Fat dripping onto a hot surface is the usual cause. Ovens with a drip tray close to the lower heating elements, or a drip pan narrower than the basket, smoke more with bacon, wings or pork belly. Keep fatty food toward the center of the basket, empty the crumb tray often and wipe out grease once the oven cools.

Are dials or digital controls better on a toaster oven?

Dials are simpler and very hard to get wrong; the Cuisinart TOA-70 uses four of them and still cooks evenly. Digital ovens add presets, memory and features like the Typhur Sync's wireless probe and app alerts, or the Breville's automatic adjustment for a second round of toast. Pick dials for simplicity and digital for automation.
